Past Lives

by Lee Preston

/
1.
I live on a dragonfly I say hello to the people passing by But I escape their sight For I'm just a mite And I live on a dragonfly Some people look my way And as they pass I can hear them say, "Oh, what a lovely bug to see" But they're not talking about me Because I live on a dragonfly Oh, the world's so giant and I'm inclined to feel so small upon it's back But, I'll just keep trying saying hi and maybe someone might say hi back If no one should notice me Then I suppose that's the way it must be And when my day turns to night Pray my soul to take flight On the wings of a dragonfly
2.
When the cost of living gets too high, die. When the price you pay to face another day is getting too high, When the seeds that you're sowing, you know you cannot reap Make a break for the pearly gates and say this to St. Pete, Oh me, oh my, I want my piece of pie in the sky So, let the lightning flash and let thunder roll Because the sky is never as crazy as the mean old world Do my last singing in this land, then turn in my hand, Head to the promise land where they've got a brand new band for me There's a place in Wyoming where they lay in the shade all day And the evening breeze and the cottonwood trees sing your sorrows away But I never will go there, I can almost guarantee So, let my bells start tolling, let my hearse come rolling And on up to heaven I'll be
3.
There's a point to this I found meaning in a kiss The taste of salt on someone else's lips There's a point to this Let the love and hate permeate the skin Burn and rage and burn again There's a point to this I found it in the beds I slept in In the absolution of my sins I found it in the loss and grief I found it in the disbelief There's a point to this I found it in the warmth of the sun In the cool of the dirt In the pain and the hurt and in you I found it in the air and sea In the sometimes gentile waves in me There's a point to this
4.
The past has been won Everything I do has already been done When I die, who will remember me and Will that memory be worth remembering? I don't want anyone I don't want anything I want nothingness I want to be the last great thing
